Our Programs

Organizing

We mobilize justice-impacted communities to advocate for themselves, challenge unjust policies, and build economic power through leadership development and grassroots campaigns that strengthen local networks and drive long-term structural change.

S.T.A.B.L.E. Program

S.T.A.B.L.E. is a leadership, housing, and economic empowerment program for formerly-incarcerated Black women. It includes:

12-Month Re-entry Track:

Focuses on economic stability, political education, and leadership development. So far, over 213 women have completed the program, with 93% achieving long-term financial security.

8-Week Entrepreneurship Track:

Helps participants build micro-enterprises in e-commerce and retail. Graduates receive hands-on training, coaching, and access to microloans. To date, 30% have launched businesses, while others secured living-wage jobs.

Pretrial Bail Organizing

Each year, we partner with the Free Atlanta Abolition Movement (FAAM) to post bail for Black mothers ahead of Mother’s Day—bringing families back together and challenging the harm of cash bail. Freed women are connected with housing, employment, and mental health support to aid their return home.

Economic Mobility

Barred Business is leading economic justice work in Georgia through three campaigns—BEST, EARN, and ECOSYS—in partnership with GBPI, Pro Georgia, and others. Together, we’re building stability and opportunity for justice-impacted people, especially Black families.

We’re tackling mass probation, fines and fees, and job restrictions that block economic mobility. Our work centers inclusive, data-driven solutions—because when justice-impacted people thrive, Georgia thrives.

Barred Business Membership Meeting

Membership

Barred Business is building a powerful, justice-impacted movement rooted in healing, organizing, economic, and civic liberation. Whether you’re new to the fight or a lifelong freedom fighter, there’s a place for you in our membership community.

Our membership model follows a ladder of engagement—designed to meet you where you are and grow with you over time.

Policy Advocacy

We educate and empower communities to push for systemic change, including legislation that recognizes justice-impacted people as a protected class, while partnering with allies to shift policies and dismantle harmful practices.

Protected Campaign

More than 44,000 collateral consequences continue to restrict justice-impacted people. Our Protected Campaign pushes back by advancing legal protections that recognize formerly incarcerated individuals as a protected class—locally and nationally.

Atlanta Protected Campaign

In 2022, we helped make history when Atlanta became the first U.S. city to classify formerly incarcerated people as a protected class. We continue working to enforce that law, support impacted residents, and expand protections across the country. For more information:v

Protected Class Coalition

Barred Business leads a powerful coalition of grassroots organizers, legal advocates, and community partners working to end systemic discrimination against justice-impacted people. Together, we challenge harmful laws and push for policies that recognize formerly incarcerated individuals as a protected class. Our coalition’s work is rooted in local leadership and collective action that drives lasting change

Protected Class Network

The Protected Class Network unites organizations and advocates across the country who are fighting for legal protections for people with conviction histories. Barred Business serves as the national convener—supporting, training, and amplifying campaigns in more than a dozen states. This network strengthens local fights and builds national momentum toward justice and equality for all.

Civic Engagement

We work to ensure that justice-impacted people and their communities understand their rights, have access to the ballot, hold elected officials accountable, and advocate for stronger representation at every level of government.

Release The Vote

The Release The Vote (RTV) Campaign builds political power by restoring voting rights and mobilizing justice-impacted communities—especially those left out of traditional voter outreach.
