Our Mission

Barred Business’ mission is to heal, resource, and build power for and with justice-impacted people, their families, and communities. We do this through organizing, policy advocacy, and civic engagement.

Our Vision

We envision a world where justice-impacted people can live, earn, build collective power, and grow economically without discrimination. To ensure our vision comes to fruition, we work to change policies, transform social institutions, and advance electoral strategies to build, seize, and retain power.

Our Approach

Through organizing, policy making, and civic action, we create pathways for real change and lasting impact.

Organizing

We mobilize justice-impacted communities to advocate for themselves, challenge unjust policies, and build economic power through leadership development, mutual aid, and grassroots campaigns that strengthen local networks and drive long-term structural change.

Policy Advocacy

We educate and empower communities to push for systemic change, including legislation that recognizes justice-impacted people as a protected class, while partnering with allies to shift policies and dismantle harmful practices.

Civic Engagement

We work to ensure that justice-impacted people and their communities understand their rights, have access to the ballot, and hold elected officials accountable and advocate for stronger representation at every level of government.

"We are justice-impacted people leading the fight for our own liberation. What sets us apart is that we don’t operate from a place of charity; we operate from a place of power-building."

Our Story

Founded in 2020 by formerly incarcerated Black women, Barred Business (BB) is a grassroots organization rooted in power-building principles. What began as an economic justice initiative has expanded into a national movement pushing for systemic change.

Through community building and partnerships, BB has led the charge in policy shifts, rights restoration, and economic empowerment for justice-impacted people. Our work is defined by action—organizing, passing local legislation, and building infrastructure for lasting economic independence. Today, BB continues to evolve, training and mobilizing thousands across the country.

Our IMPACT

Through organizing, policy, and civic action, we create pathways for real change and lasting impact.
